Of course, people did not create Nevada's beautiful desert landscapes, which can be even more wondrous than a city of flashing neon. Nor did they manufacture the pyramid at Pyramid Lake or the hundreds of remote mountains that pepper the state. With both isolated wilderness and bustling casino towns, Nevada is a place where you can get back to basics and also relish some of the guiltiest pleasures mankind can dream up.

Your Destination:

Las Vegas

Millions of visitors descend on the “city that never sleeps” every year. The flashing lights of casinos offer the thrill of chance. Dazzling shows delight the senses. And scrumptious food is found at five-star restaurants and expansive buffets. Plus, unique shops, health spas, golf courses, and yes, marriage chapels, make Las Vegas a one-of-a-kind destination.

DINING

Las Vegas is a culinary wonder. In fact, it’s a global gourmet mecca with just about every cuisine for every budget, including the infamous casino buffets.

SHOPPING

In Las Vegas, elegant, high-quality clothing and other treasures are as plentiful as casinos. You’ll find many unique treasures here. Plus, Native American arts and crafts, western art and clothing and numerous products made from local silver are always nearby.

TRAVEL TIPS

For gaming, all players must be at least 21 years old—no exceptions. Electronic items such as cell phones or pagers are not permitted at gaming tables.

Tipping is a way of life in Las Vegas. A good rule of thumb is 15 to 20 percent for food service. Generally tip $1 to $2 for each bag of luggage. If you are using concierge services, a $5 tip is appropriate. If you’re lucky to win at the tables, a small bet for the dealer is the usual method of tipping at gaming tables. A small tip is also appropriate for keno runners and slot attendants. Taxi drivers usually receive $1 to $2 for a direct route or the 15 to 20 percent rule; whichever is greater. Tour guides receive $1 to $2 for each person, given at the end of the tour. You should also tip $2 to a parking valet, while $2 a day is a good tip for housekeeping services.

Remember you are in a desert, and your body will need fluids, especially in the summer months. Carry a bottle of water, and be sure to bring sunscreen.

Be aware of your surroundings and stay away from threatening situations. If gaming, keep an eye on your purse, change bucket or chips. If there is an incident, police and security personnel are generally highly visible.

WEATHER

With its arid climate, Las Vegas sees more than 300 days of sunshine per year, with an average annual rainfall of only 4.13 inches (10.5 cm) and an average humidity rate of 29 percent. During summer months, it's not unusual for humidity rates to consistently be under 10 percent, but temperatures can soar to well above 100. While temperatures in Las Vegas remain warm in the winter, most of the Las Vegas Valley is at an elevation over 2,000 feet and can be chillier than you may expect, particularly in the evenings. Long pants, a sweater and/ or a jacket are recommended if visiting between late October and early April. During spring and summer months, t-shirts, shorts and athletic shoes are a common sight in the hotels and casinos.

GETTING THERE

Major domestic airlines and their affiliated regional carriers serve both McCarran International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas and Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) near Reno. Major car-rental agencies maintain branches at both airports. McCarran Airport is the main airport serving Las Vegas and Clark County. It is located 1 mile (1.6 km.) from the Strip, 3.5 miles (5.6 km.) from the Convention Center and 5 miles (8 km.) from Downtown Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Airport is ranked among the 10 busiest airports in the world based on the amount of passenger activity, serving over 40 air carriers. With over 950 flights arriving and departing daily, McCarran International Airport offers direct flights to more than 100 U.S. cities.
